Army Seize Meth Pills After Firefight In Chiang Mai

The army said yesterday that soldiers confiscated 100,000 meth pills abandoned by traffickers during a gunfight on Wednesday in Chiang Mai.

Soldiers from the Third Army Region seized the pills, which were in a large backpack made from a fertiliser bag, as well as a cap gun following the clash in a forest in a border area of Chiang Mai’s Mae Ai district.

The soldiers were patrolling along the border to prevent illegal entry and drug trafficking, said their commander, Col Ekkawut Sukkharos.

While in the forest they stumbled upon four people carrying backpacks. When the soldiers challenged them the suspects opened fire, triggering a gun battle that lasted about five minutes.

Yesterday, soldiers sent the examine the area where the clash took place found one backpack and the gun.

Investigators believe the suspects were delivering the pills to a contact in Mae Ai district who was to distribute them to other parts of the country.

The seized pills were sent to Mae Ai station.
