Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has stated that Brazil winger Antony must “earn the right” to be part of the team’s lineup.
Having joined the club for £82 million from Ajax in 2022, Antony is the second-most expensive player in United history, following Paul Pogba. However, his performance has not matched his price tag, as he managed just five goals and three assists in 55 Premier League appearances last season, contributing only one goal and one assist while the team finished in eighth place.
The 24-year-old has had limited action this season, playing just one minute of competitive football against Brighton last month. With players like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo being preferred in attack, Antony faces increased pressure to reclaim his starting position.
Ten Hag emphasized that Antony’s future is in his own hands, saying, “He’s impatient. He wants to play. But in top football, there are rules. You choose the team that gives the best chance to win, considering the right dynamics and chemistry. Players must fight for their places.”
With Rashford, Garnacho, and Amad all finding the net this season, Antony’s need to step up has intensified, especially as he was linked with a move to Turkish club Fenerbahce before the transfer window closed.
“The other players are doing exceptionally well and contributing,” Ten Hag noted. “Antony must surpass them and prove himself in training.”
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Barnsley at Old Trafford, Ten Hag stated, “You will see what the lineup will be. Every day in training, players need to earn their right to play. Those who demonstrate the right attitude and performance will get their opportunities.”
