Ancelotti Hails Mbappe as ‘Icing on the Cake’ After Hat Trick

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti labeled Kylian Mbappe the “icing on the cake” after the striker scored a hat trick in a standout performance against Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Madrid emerged victorious with a 3-1 win in the second leg of the playoffs, securing a 6-3 aggregate triumph that sets them up for a last-16 clash against either crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.

In a post-match interview, Ancelotti acknowledged the team’s exceptional display, noting that they “played very well” and were “complete defensively.” He praised his players’ ability to control possession against their opponents and highlighted the quality of their performance.

When asked about rising star Raul Asencio, who had an impressive game, Ancelotti emphasized the contributions of the entire squad, mentioning key players like Ferland Mendy, Toni Rudiger, and Fede Valverde.

“It was a good game. They have learned what to do very well. This tie strengthens us. We’ve showcased our best form,” he added, before praising Mbappe’s hat trick. “Everyone expected this, and it has arrived. We have many players who can make a difference, marked by our collective work.”

Concerning the upcoming challenge against title rival Atletico Madrid, with whom Madrid has drawn twice in La Liga this season, Ancelotti replied, “Whatever comes.” He pointed out that it was a tough journey to reach the last 16, highlighting that it took the team ten games to get there and expressing hope for a successful run.

Following a draw against Osasuna, which resulted in Jude Bellingham receiving a red card and a two-match ban, Madrid looks ahead to a domestic match against Girona on Sunday. Additionally, they will keep an eye on Friday’s Champions League knockout phase draw, which will determine their next opponent, either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.
