Top Gun was one of the biggest box office and pop culture landmarks of the 1980s. Released in ’86 at the height of Morning in America jingoism, it starred Tom Cruise as Maverick, a hot shot Naval fighter pilot who doesn’t play by your rules, man! When he wasn’t showboating in the sky, he was romancing Kelly McGillis’ Charlie in the evenings, and crooning the Righteous Brothers alongside Anthony Edwards’ Goose. There was even time for a pickup game of shirtless, always-flexing volleyball against Val Kilmer’s Iceman too.
Top Gun 2, which likely will have the title of Top Gun: Maverick, is officially happening over at Paramount. Joseph Kosinski is directing. Kosinski previously worked with Cruise on 2013’s Oblivion, a visually stylish sci-fi film where Cruise works on a seemingly abandoned Earth. Kosinski also directed 2010’s Tron: Legacy.
It appears that production has kicked off, as Tom Cruise has just given fans a look at the first image from the movie…
Top Gun: Maverick will open on July 12, 2019. Tony Scott’s original film may not have been a masterpiece, but it left one hell of an impression that still has us humming that “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin.’” Presumably, Top Gun 2 will be breaking out an unchained melody or two of its own.
