Former England international Joe Cole has suggested that a Premier League star could soon take over from Harry Kane as England’s main striker.
Kane, 31, remains England’s all-time leading goalscorer, continuing to showcase his abilities as one of the best strikers in global football. He has already netted 10 goals in just seven games this season for Bayern Munich, as he seeks further success with the German giants.
However, looking toward the future of England’s attack, Cole believes Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon is well-suited to step into Kane’s shoes when the time comes. “I’ve been really impressed with him in this position; he gives you an option,” Cole said about Gordon during an appearance on TNT Sports.
“From an outsider’s perspective, that’s something for the manager to consider. His pressing was exceptional—a performance that stands out for a number nine in a long time. He is not one of many who buy into the pressing game as fully as he does, which set the tone. Newcastle’s team was brilliant defensively, but he was crucial to that.”
Despite Kane receiving criticism for his performances at Euro 2024—where he scored three goals before England lost in the final to Spain—Cole believes Gordon’s versatility could be a significant asset for the national side.
England Under-21s coach Joleon Lescott noted that Gordon excels on the left flank but has also been effective in the central striking role. “He loves one-on-one situations, and when we played him as a number nine in the tournament, he was the player of the tournament. He’s someone who constantly runs in behind and works hard off the ball,” Lescott explained.
Gordon played just two minutes during Euro 2024, leading to questions about Gareth Southgate’s choices. With six caps to his name, Gordon will undoubtedly be eager for more opportunities under interim coach Lee Carsley this year.
