Erik ten Hag has addressed Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent comments regarding Manchester United’s ability to compete for the Premier League title, stating that “he is far away from Manchester.”
Ronaldo’s second stint at United ended sourly following a fallout with Ten Hag, leading to the termination of his contract. The Portuguese forward expressed feelings of betrayal by the manager, commenting this week, “They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach says they cannot compete to win the league or Champions League. As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you aren’t going to fight for these titles.”
Ten Hag’s side is set to face Southampton in the early kick-off on Saturday, looking to improve their form after losing two of their opening three Premier League matches. Over their last 16 league games, Ten Hag has overseen just five wins.
In response to Ronaldo’s remarks, Ten Hag said, “He said that Manchester United can’t win the Premier League. If you read the article carefully, he stated that. So he’s far away in Saudi Arabia, far from Manchester. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that’s okay.”
Ten Hag Says to Judge Us in May
With pressure mounting on Ten Hag following the club’s lowest Premier League finish last season (eighth place), he faces a hectic schedule that includes seven games in 22 days following September’s international break. This stretch could prove crucial for his future at the club.
When asked about his position, Ten Hag replied, “We will see where we are in May. It’s very early in the season, and our goal is to win trophies and finish as high as possible. We must do everything to win every game. What matters is how we perform in May. It doesn’t impact me.”
He added, “I know where we are headed; we’re still in a transition period. We need to integrate many young players and address our injury issues. Before anyone suggests excuses, no, we have to win every game. The team knows this.”
Injury Update Ahead of Southampton: Ugarte Available
Concerning injuries, Ten Hag cautioned that new signing Manuel Ugarte might take “months” to adapt to the Premier League, but the manager will need him sooner rather than later, especially after Casemiro’s disappointing performance against Liverpool highlighted midfield problems.
“Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are progressing well but are not ready for this game,” Ten Hag said. “Manuel Ugarte has returned this afternoon; he was the only player back today, while the others returned yesterday, so he is available for selection in this match.”
