League Two side Barrow ended a 56-year wait to reach the Carabao Cup third round by defeating Championship club Derby County 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.
Barrow’s goalkeeper, Paul Farman, made a crucial save against Craig Forsyth during the shootout, with James Collins and Kayden Jackson also missing for Derby. Both teams hit the woodwork in regular time, with Jackson hitting a post and Barrow’s Kian Spence striking the bar with a late free-kick.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed frustration over what he called a “ridiculous” foul that led to the injury of new signing Matt O’Riley earlier in the match. O’Riley will undergo a scan on Wednesday after being forced off just nine minutes into his debut.
In another upset, Blackpool, currently without a manager, pulled off a stunning 2-1 win over Championship side Blackburn. Arnor Sigurdsson opened the scoring for Rovers with a penalty, but Blackpool equalized through Jake Beesley and took the lead with a goal from Hayden Coulson.
In a dominant performance, Stoke City, fielding a young team, defeated last year’s semi-finalists Middlesbrough 5-0. Goals from Emre Tezgel and Ryan Mmaee set the tone, with two late goals from Million Manhoef sealing the rout.
Leyton Orient pulled off an impressive upset against Millwall, securing a 1-0 victory with a goal from Dan Agyei, while Barnsley edged past Sheffield United with a 1-0 win courtesy of Max Watters’ second-half strike.
League Two side Walsall came from two goals down to beat Huddersfield Town 3-2, benefiting from a red card shown to a Huddersfield player just before halftime. Walsall’s comeback included a late own goal from Michal Helik.
Preston North End advanced with a convincing 5-0 victory at Harrogate, featuring a hat-trick from Milutin Osmajic. Other notable results included Coventry’s 1-0 win over Oxford thanks to Brandon Thomas-Asante’s deflected goal, and Bolton’s 2-0 victory at Shrewsbury with goals from Jordi Osei-Tutu and Dion Charles.
The third-round draw will take place on Wednesday.
