Around 20 tonnes of narcotics, valued at over six billion baht, were incinerated at Bangpu Industrial Estate in Samut Prakan on Wednesday as part of the government’s ongoing fight against illegal drugs, according to the Public Health Ministry.
This was the second drug destruction event in 2024, following multiple seizures from crackdowns nationwide. The event was held to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26.
Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin delegated Opas Karnkawinpong, the ministry’s permanent secretary, to oversee the proceedings. The event saw participation from various agencies, including the Royal Thai Police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).
In total, approximately 20.6 tonnes of drugs were destroyed, comprising 19.9 tonnes of methamphetamine, 274 kilograms of heroin, 312 kilograms of ketamine, and 48 kilograms of opium. The street value of the destroyed drugs was estimated at around 6.45 billion baht.
Mr. Somsak emphasized that combating illegal drug trafficking remains a top priority for the nation.
