Starting as a teacher, Ó Muircheartaigh became RTÉ Radio 1’s leading commentator in 1985, succeeding Míchael O’Hehir. He called his final All-Ireland final in 2010, retiring after Cork’s victory over Down in October of that year.
Reflecting on his career before retiring, Ó Muircheartaigh said his work “enabled me to meet and get to know generations of great sportsmen and women and many of those associated with them.”
“It was an honor for me to be at the source of this wonderful entertainment, to be part of a continuous and successful venture,” he said.
He is survived by his wife Helena, his three sons, five daughters, grandchildren, and extended family.
