Brighton has engaged in discussions with St. Pauli to appoint Fabian Hurzeler as the Premier League’s youngest manager, according to talkSPORT.
The 31-year-old St. Pauli boss, born in the USA, is Brighton’s top choice to replace Roberto De Zerbi after a comprehensive selection process. Hurzeler has received high praise in Germany, and Brighton hopes to bring him to England.
Initially, Brighton considered a return for Graham Potter, but as previously reported by talkSPORT, this option is unlikely. Potter appears to be keeping his options open in case Gareth Southgate steps down as England manager after the upcoming Euros.
The Seagulls also showed interest in Kieran McKenna before he extended his contract with Ipswich. Hurzeler, who led St. Pauli to Bundesliga promotion after a 13-year absence, took the role just 18 months ago. He had previously managed the German amateur side FC Pipinsried for four years.
Another potential candidate was Malmo boss Henrik Rydstrom, who guided his team to the Swedish title last season. However, Brighton is now fully focused on Hurzeler.
In a positive development for Brighton, Hurzeler has been approved by the FA for visa purposes, allowing him to take the vacant position at the Amex Stadium. Hurzeler, who was born in Houston, Texas, has never coached in the top flight but will make his debut in either the Premier League or Bundesliga next season.
Hurzeler took over St. Pauli in December 2022 when they were just above the relegation zone in Bundesliga 2. His impact was immediate, leading the team to win their first ten matches under his management, eventually finishing fifth. He capped off an impressive 18 months by steering St. Pauli to the title.
Hurzeler has also served as an assistant manager for Germany’s Under-18 and Under-20 teams. His success has drawn comparisons to Julian Nagelsmann, the current national team coach. However, Hurzeler humbly downplays these comparisons, saying: “It wouldn’t be fair to him because he is an amazing coach. I must stay humble and walk my own way.”
Brighton fans eagerly await Hurzeler’s potential arrival, hoping his fresh perspective and dynamic approach will lead the club to new heights.
