On their way to Malaysia, the foreign males were apprehended in Songkhla province in southern Thailand. After receiving a report from an unnamed concerned person, the Hat Yai tourist police and Songkhla immigration detained these fake monks.
The foreigners believed they might avoid detection as they attempted to enter into Malaysia by shaving their heads and dressing in monk robes. The group’s commander, a 46-year-old guy only known as Mr. Rupdah, acknowledged being in charge.
Investigation revealed that all seven guys had successfully crossed into Myanmar from Bangladesh before entering Thailand illegally by a natural path in Tak province’s Mae Sot district. They were going to Narathiwat, and then they were going to go on to Malaysia.
The men were found to be in possession of both normal attire and no monk identifying documents after an examination of their luggage. This led to speculations that they might have been posing as monks to avoid government inspection.
The men were accused of entering Thailand unlawfully. They were transferred to Hat Yai Police Station to wait for their deportation back to Bangladesh after leaving their robes and monastic life at Wat Khok Samankhun.
