Street sweeper killed

A local street cleaner has been pronounced dead after being hit by a vehicle in Mueang Chonburi yesterday morning.

Lieutenant Colonel Samrueng Naewin of the Mueang Chonburi Police was notified of the accident yesterday morning, January 20, 2020, on Sukhumwit Road in Bang Plasoi.

Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene to find 52-year-old Mr. Samrueng Klinkaew who is a road cleaner for the Mueang Chonburi Municipality.

He had sustained serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.

A damaged vehicle was found one kilometer from the scene. The driver had at first fled after the accident but was forced to stop further away.

The driver, 28 year old Apinan Krasaechon, told Chonburi police that he tried to avoid another vehicle but crashed into the street sweeper on the road. He said he didn’t know it was a person but panicked and drove away, being pursued by others until being forced to stop his vehicle.

Mr. Apinan is facing charges of reckless driving causing death. Police did not state to The Pattaya News if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
