On Friday at 8:37 a.m., an earthquake with a Richter value of 6.4 struck Myanmar. The Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department reported that the earthquake occurred approximately 100 kilometers northwest of the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai.
The epicentre of the earthquake, which happened at a depth of nine kilometers, was situated roughly 76 kilometers southwest of Kengtung township in Shan State, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Not long after the earthquake, three aftershocks with magnitudes of 4.1, 3.5, and 3.4 were detected.
Muang, Mae Suay, and Mae Sai districts in Chiang Rai; Saraphi and Muang districts in Chiang Mai; Muang district in Lamphun; certain areas of Nan; and Lak Si district in Bangkok were also claimed to have felt the tremor.
Along with Udon Thani and Khon Kaen in the Northeast, Mae Hong Son in the North also felt the tremor.
The head of Chiang Mai’s disaster prevention and mitigation office, Arun Pinta, reported that personnel and patients at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, along with occupants of high-rise structures, reported feeling the tremor for approximately five seconds.
According to Mr. Arun, there have been no reports of reservoir or dam damage in the northern province thus far. Every district is conducting surveys to assess any potential earthquake-related damage.
