A woman was killed and 17 other people (YES 17 ) injured when a pickup truck carrying migrant workers crashed into another pickup truck carrying workers
in Chai Nat province in the early hours of Saturday.
The crash occurred at Khung Samphao intersection on Phaholyothin Road in Manorom district around 2am, Thai media reported.
Police and rescuers rushed to the scene and found a Toyota pickup truck with Kamphaeng Phet licence plates. The impact of the crash ripped off its roof and scattered the victims’ belongings.
The driver had fled, while two passengers, who were Myanmar nationals, tried to flee but were caught by police.
A red Toyota pickup truck with Bangkok licence plates was found in a roadside ditch near the crash site. The left section of the vehicle was badly damaged.
A body of a dead woman was inside the vehicle. The victim was later identified as Anu Bualuang, 56. Prachaya Bualuang, 31, was the driver of the red pickup truck and the victim’s son.
A total of 16 people were injured in the crash, including 13 Myanmar migrant workers. All were taken to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured migrants tested positive for Covid-19.
According to a police investigation, the red pickup truck was carrying performers of the Sornram Nampetch troupe, a popular likay troupe in the country. Mr Prachaya and one of the performers were seen crying and hugging the body of his mother.
He told investigators that his troupe was on the way to return to Ayutthaya province after performing a show at Wat Nong Khunchart in Uthai Thai province.
There were four people inside his pickup truck, including his mother, who sat in the back seat.
His vehicle was hit by the pickup truck that ran a red light at Khung Samphao intersection. The force of the crash caused his vehicle to plunge into the roadside ditch, said Mr Prachya.
Police were investigating and tracking down the driver of another pickup truck.
