A jewelry merchant hurriedly reported to the police after discovering that a Canadian man had stolen three gemstones valued at 14.5 million baht (approximately 400,000 US dollars). The incident was particularly distressing for the merchant because the suspect was someone he had known for a decade. According to Police Lieutenant Phuwiwat Jira-akkaratas, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Yannawa Police Station, the 40-year-old gem merchant filed the report on July 19, detailing the theft of the following gemstones:
- A yellow gemstone weighing 149.02 carats, worth about 10,500,000 baht
- A blue gemstone weighing 13.03 carats, valued at around 2,000,000 baht
- Another blue gemstone weighing 13.01 carats, also valued at approximately 2,000,000 baht
The total value of the stolen gems was approximately 14,500,000 baht. The theft occurred around 10:00 a.m. on July 17, when the merchant met with the suspect, identified as Mr. Aamir, at a luxury hotel on Charoen Krung Road, Yannawa Subdistrict, Sathorn District, Bangkok. Mr. Aamir, whom the merchant trusted due to their long-standing business relationship, claimed he would show the gemstones to potential customers but vanished after receiving them. Efforts to contact Mr. Aamir were futile, prompting the merchant to report the incident.
Investigations by the Metropolitan Police Bureau, led by Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengswang, uncovered CCTV footage showing Mr. Aamir calling for a Grab taxi from the hotel. Subsequent immigration checks confirmed that Mr. Aamir departed Thailand at 11:39 a.m. on July 17 aboard Swiss Air flight LX 181 bound for Switzerland.
Authorities are now in the process of gathering evidence to obtain an arrest warrant for Mr. Aamir.
