Underage and trafficking concerns in Pattaya

Concerns have arisen regarding the involvement of underage individuals in Pattaya’s nightlife scene. Many bars and beer bars in the city are owned by foreigners, who are careful to avoid engaging minors in their businesses due to potential legal consequences.

These establishments often operate on a voluntary basis, with women willingly participating in activities with customers. However, a concerning practice is the bars taking a percentage of the women’s earnings, resembling a quasi-agency system.

Foreign tourists may perceive these bars as trustworthy, but there have been instances of underage individuals attempting to work using fake IDs. As a result, there is a growing call for intervention and scrutiny in Pattaya’s nightlife industry, including alternative employment opportunities for underage individuals and stringent measures for age verification and human trafficking prevention.

Collaboration with organizations specializing in combating human trafficking and raising community awareness and education on these issues is seen as essential.
