Two American tourists were injured, one seriously, in a suspected shark attack in the Bahamas, police reported.
The incident occurred on Friday around 6:30 p.m. while the two women were swimming in Bimini Bay, as confirmed by the Royal Bahamas Police Force over the weekend. “Initial reports indicate that the victims, both U.S. residents, sustained injuries while swimming in the waters at Bimini Bay,” police stated.
Both women suffered injuries to their lower bodies, with one sustaining serious injuries. They were initially treated at a local clinic before being airlifted to New Providence for further medical attention. According to Bahamian officials, both have since returned to the United States.
One victim is scheduled for a third surgery to repair damage to her leg in the Orlando, Florida area, her family informed ABC News.
The incident is still under investigation. Shark attacks are rare; the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File recorded 69 unprovoked shark bites worldwide in 2023, with only one fatal attack occurring in the Bahamas. In that incident, a 44-year-old woman from Massachusetts was killed by a shark while paddleboarding near the Sandals resort, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
