Tuk Tuk driver busted after demanding ransom for passenger’s iphone
On August 15th, police set up a successful sting operation in Bangkok which ended in a tuk tuk driver being arrested and charged with theft.
Police were first made aware of the situation when a Myanmar tourist reported that she had left her phone on the back seat of a tuk-tuk.
The 24 year old tourist, Khine Mon Oo had called her phone over 20 times but there was no answer until much to her delight, it was finally answered by the driver.
That was the end of the good news, however, as the tuk tuk driver demanded a cash ransom of 5,000 baht to return the phone.
Miss Oo was hesitant at first and told the driver she didn’t have that kind of money on her. The tuk tuk driver refused to return the phone, at which point, Miss Oo was left with no option but to call for police help.
Bang Khun Thian police came up with a plan in which Miss Oo would lure the tuk tuk driver, identified as Yiam Boonsri, 59, to a Tesco Lotus in Bang Bon District where she would hand over the 5,000 baht ransom in return for her phone.
The tuk tuk driver must have thought it was his lucky day and couldn’t get to the meeting point fast enough, where unfortunately for him, he was not greeted by the young victim, but a handful of police officers instead.
The phone was safely returned to the victim and the tuk-tuk driver was reportedly charged with theft of property.
