Thieves Steal Luxury Watches Worth Over 100 Million Baht from Chonburi Mansion
A group of thieves targeted the luxury home of a Chinese businessman in Chonburi, making off with high-end watches valued at over 100 million baht (approximately $2.9 million). The robbery occurred on Wednesday night in the Huay Yai subdistrict of Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province.
Break-In and Discovery
Police began their investigation on January 16 at the two-story house, valued at approximately 8 million baht. The burglars reportedly gained access by forcing open a rear window. Their primary target was a large safe on the second floor, measuring 1 meter wide and 1.5 meters tall.
Investigators found the safe severely damaged, with eight empty watch boxes scattered nearby and all the timepieces missing.
The Victim and Circumstances
The homeowner, identified as Liangchen, 39, is an executive in the Chinese tour industry. He is currently unable to return to Thailand due to ongoing legal proceedings in China. The theft was discovered by Mr. Youchao, 43, a friend tasked with overseeing the property.
Mr. Youchao had been away from the residence for six hours on January 15. Upon his return, he found the damaged safe and the valuables gone.
Mr. Somboon, 56, a business partner of Liangchen, confirmed that the stolen items consisted primarily of luxury brand watches.
Investigation and Suspicions
Huay Yai Police are examining security footage and interviewing witnesses to track down the suspects. The residential complex, popular among Chinese nationals, comprises homes valued between 7 and 10 million baht.
Security personnel at the estate suggested the burglars may have accessed the property by climbing over the wall at the back, which is surrounded by a forested area.
Next Steps
Police are working closely with the homeowner in China to confirm the exact inventory of stolen items. Local authorities are also heightening security measures in the area to prevent similar incidents.
The case highlights concerns over property security in high-end residential areas, particularly those frequented by affluent expatriates.
