Thailand’s Songkran Festival 2025 Expected to Be More Lively Than Last Year
Thailand, March 24, 2025 – Chai Arunanondchai, President of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), has predicted that this year’s Songkran Festival (April 13-15) will be even more vibrant than in 2024, thanks to expanded celebrations and government initiatives.
Extended Festivities with “Maha Songkran World Water Festival”
The Thai government’s “Maha Songkran World Water Festival” campaign will extend celebrations throughout April, increasing tourism and local business activity. Provincial authorities and business operators across Thailand are actively preparing for large crowds and an influx of both domestic and international travelers.
Adding to the festival’s popularity, the hit series The White Lotus recently featured Songkran, boosting international awareness of the Thai New Year celebration.
Tourism and Economic Trends
-
While Thailand’s economy has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, domestic spending remains stable.
-
Luxury spending—especially on branded goods—has declined, particularly among Chinese tourists, though high-end Thai consumers continue to spend.
-
Many Thai travelers are still opting for international destinations, with Japan, Hong Kong, and China being the most popular choices.
Calls for More Domestic Travel Incentives
To encourage domestic tourism, Chai suggested expanding the successful “Half-Half Co-Payment” scheme, which provides government subsidies for consumer spending. This could help redirect Thai travelers toward local destinations and boost spending within Thailand.
With extended celebrations, strategic tourism promotions, and growing international attention, Songkran 2025 is set to be one of the most exciting in recent years.
