Thailand's biggest call scam centre boss arrested

Thai police arrested a Chinese man suspected of leading the country’s largest call scam operation near the Cambodia border.

Police Major General Montree Theskhan, commander of the Crime Suppression Division, identified the suspect as 35-year-old Demin Wen. He was detained on a road leading to Cambodia in Ban Non Sao Ae village, located in the Phan Suek sub-district of Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo.

According to Theskhan, Demin Wen is believed to have acquired numerous SIM boxes, SIM cards, and related equipment, which were set up in multiple rented houses in Chiang Mai province to run call scam centers.

In recent raids on the properties in Chiang Mai, police arrested Demin’s Thai wife, who allegedly managed the operations. During these raids, authorities discovered 642 SIM boxes, 590,000 SIM cards, 72 computers, and 1,455 mobile phones.

After the raids, Demin fled Chiang Mai, traveling by car to Nakhon Sawan province, where he abandoned his vehicle before taking a bus to Bangkok. His wife, Yin Xiaoying, is accused of helping him escape further, arranging for his move from Bangkok to Sa Kaeo, near the Cambodian border.

Demin claimed to the police that he was unaware of his wife’s arrest and had only planned to visit Rong Kluea Market in Sa Kaeo.

On Sunday, police also apprehended his 37-year-old wife at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
