Same-sex couples in Thailand will be able to register their marriages starting January 23, 2025, as the landmark Marriage Equality Act comes into effect. This historic law grants same-sex partners the same legal rights and recognition as heterosexual couples.
Marriages can be registered at any district office across Thailand and at Thai embassies worldwide. To mark the occasion, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has organized a special event, “Marriage Equality Day,” featuring a mass marriage registration at Paragon Hall in Siam Paragon from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Celebrating Equality
The BMA encourages couples who wish to register their marriage at Siam Paragon or any of Bangkok’s 50 district offices on January 23 to complete an online registration form in advance. This will streamline the process and reduce waiting times on the big day.
Deputy Bangkok Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon stated, “This is a momentous occasion for Thailand as we champion equality and diversity. We hope this event sets a precedent for inclusivity in the region.”
Required Documentation
Couples intending to register their marriage must bring the following documents:
- Thai nationals: ID cards or equivalent government-issued documents and household registration documents.
- Foreign nationals: Passports and single-status certificates issued by their home country or embassy in Thailand.
Global and National Significance
Thailand is now the third country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, joining Taiwan and Nepal. This milestone has been celebrated as a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
The Thai government and local authorities have expressed their commitment to ensuring a smooth and joyous process for all couples as they take this monumental step. Couples and supporters worldwide are expected to join the celebrations, solidifying Thailand’s position as a leader in LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
