Thailand to Implement Equal Marriage Law, Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages on January 23, 2025
January 15, 2025 — Thailand is set to make history as the first country in Southeast Asia and the 37th worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage when the Equal Marriage Law comes into effect on January 23, 2025. This groundbreaking legislation reflects the nation’s commitment to equality and human rights.
The Equal Marriage Law amends the Civil and Commercial Code to redefine marriage as a partnership between two people, regardless of gender. Same-sex couples aged 18 and older will be able to legally register their marriages and enjoy the same rights as opposite-sex couples. Those under 20 years of age will require parental consent.
Key provisions of the law include:
- The right to adopt children.
- Equal inheritance and asset management rights.
- Access to state welfare for spouses of government officials.
- Legal pathways for divorce.
- Citizenship applications through marriage.
The legislation was approved by the House of Representatives on March 27, 2024, and the Senate on June 18, 2024, before receiving royal endorsement and being published in the Royal Gazette on September 24, 2024.
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and other districts nationwide are prepared to facilitate marriage registrations for same-sex couples on the law’s implementation date. Celebrations, including a high-profile event organized by Bangkok Pride, are planned to promote awareness of this significant milestone.
The Equal Marriage Law’s enactment cements Thailand’s position as a leader in LGBTQ+ rights in Asia. It is a testament to years of advocacy and marks a progressive step towards inclusivity and social equality.
