Thailand Confirms No Outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)
The Thai government has reassured the public that there is no outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) in the country, following concerns stemming from reports of the virus in China. Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikarn Wattanachan stated that the Ministry of Public Health has directed the Department of Disease Control (DDC) to closely monitor the situation and uphold public health measures.
What is hMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus, a respiratory virus unrelated to COVID-19, has been known for years and typically occurs throughout the year, with higher incidences during the rainy season and winter. Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or exacerbate asthma. Currently, there is no antiviral treatment available, and individuals with persistent symptoms or difficulty breathing are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
Surveillance Data in Thailand
The DDC and hospital networks reported that hMPV cases in 2024 have been significantly lower compared to other respiratory pathogens. The most affected demographics include:
- Children under five years old (35.71%)
- Adults aged 50–59 years (16.67%)
- Adults aged 30–39 years (11.90%)
No widespread cases have been reported in the country.
Preventive Measures
Health officials emphasized the importance of preventive practices, such as:
- Regular handwashing with soap and water
- Avoiding touching the face with unwashed hands
- Wearing masks in crowded or enclosed spaces
- Staying home when feeling unwell
