Tensions Rise in Pai as Israeli Tourists Deported Following Hospital Incident

Pai, Thailand – February 8, 2025 – A surge of anti-Israel sentiment has emerged in the popular backpacker town of Pai, Mae Hong Son province, after a restaurant put up a sign banning Israeli tourists. The controversy follows an incident at Pai Hospital on February 2, where four Israeli men caused a disturbance after being denied entry to the emergency room where their injured friend was being treated.

The four men, identified as Daniel Gagaev (24), Aviv Rom (26), Or Emanoel Ashton (25), and Dan Nisko (25), were fined 3,000 baht each for inappropriate behavior and subsequently deported. Medical staff reported that the group attempted to force their way into the emergency room, disregarding hospital protocols and disrupting other patients. Similar incidents of rude behavior, including distrust of Thai doctors and verbal abuse, have reportedly occurred in the past.

Following the deportation, tensions escalated when a local restaurant posted a sign stating that Israeli tourists were not welcome. A viral Facebook post and video clip further highlighted growing fears among business owners regarding certain tourists’ behavior. A restaurant owner expressed concerns over feeling unsafe due to the actions of some foreign visitors, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays, when disturbances are reportedly more frequent.

Pol. Lt. Col. Wichai Panna, a Mae Hong Son Immigration Police inspector, stated that authorities are investigating the behavior seen in the video and will take legal action if necessary.

Israeli Tourism in Pai

In 2024, 221,776 foreign tourists visited Pai, with Israelis being among the top groups. However, due to discrepancies in reporting methods—where tourists are counted multiple times when changing accommodations—the actual number of Israeli visitors is estimated to be 2,000–3,000 at present.

The incident has sparked discussions about tourist conduct and local hospitality in Pai, a town known for its laid-back and welcoming atmosphere. Authorities are working to ensure fair treatment of all visitors while addressing concerns of local business owners and residents.
