Ten Killed in Sweden's Worst Mass Shooting, Authorities Confirm

In a tragic incident, at least ten people were killed in what has been described as the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. The shooting occurred on Tuesday at a school in the city of Örebro, and the suspected gunman was also found dead.

According to Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the Örebro police district, the attack resulted in numerous injuries when the gunman opened fire during the second half of the day at Campus Risbergska, a school dedicated to adult education.

Police confirmed that the perpetrator was not previously known to law enforcement and had no links to any gangs, with no indications of ideological motives behind the attack. Forest described the shooting as “extremely tragic” and expressed the sentiment that it was “a nightmare” for the community.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his condolences to the victims and their families during a press conference. “We have today seen brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” he remarked, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the shooting an “unspeakably sad tragedy.”

The attack unfolded around 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET), with police responding swiftly. Six individuals were taken to a local university hospital, including five with gunshot wounds. Four of those hospitalized underwent surgery, with two reported to be in stable condition. Initial reports indicated an exchange of gunfire between the police and the shooter, but no officers were injured.

In light of the violence, the public was advised to avoid the area, and nearby schools began transferring students away from the active scene.

As the investigation progressed, police announced they were examining various locations in Örebro and emphasized that while they believe the shooter acted alone, they would not rule out the possibility of additional suspects.

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf conveyed his sorrow in a written statement, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and gratitude to the emergency services for their efforts during this dark day.

Eyewitness accounts described the atmosphere of terror in the school. Andreas Sundling, 28, recounted, “We heard three bangs and loud screams,” while remaining sheltered in a classroom as they awaited evacuation.

The Risbergska school serves students aged 20 and older, providing courses that include vocational training and support for immigrants. A teacher noted that there were unexpectedly few students on campus at the time of the shooting, as many had left after taking a national exam that day.

Over recent years, Swedish authorities have intensified efforts to combat gun violence in response to an increase in gang-related shootings. In 2024, at least 40 individuals were shot dead, with police reporting intervention in over 100 serious crimes.

In the aftermath, Kristersson called for an investigation into how such a horrific event could occur. He expressed sympathy for those affected, stating, “It is a very painful day for all of Sweden,” and acknowledged the fear students faced by being confined to classrooms during the attack.
