Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has the support of senior figures at the club as he aims for sustained success, despite a heavy 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
After a disappointing eighth-place finish last season—United’s worst since 1990—Ten Hag is facing pressure again as his team’s struggles continue with three points from their opening three games. Losing to Liverpool has dropped United to 14th in the Premier League table.
If they fail to secure points against Southampton after the international break on September 14, it would mark their worst start since the 1986-87 season.
Ahead of the clash with Liverpool, both chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth expressed their confidence in Ten Hag, indicating their backing regardless of the results. Berrada stated, “Erik has our full backing. We think he is the right coach for us.”
While Ten Hag acknowledged the team’s need for improvement, he remained optimistic about Casemiro’s capabilities despite criticism over his recent performances. “We have to accept this and improve our game,” Ten Hag said.
A Difficult Start for United
Fans and pundits alike have voiced concerns over United’s inability to capitalize on their opportunities, noting that they made individual errors that led to Liverpool’s clinical finishes.
“It’s clear Liverpool deserved their victory,” Ten Hag remarked. “We must be humble in recognizing our mistakes, but there’s still time to improve.”
With a demanding schedule ahead, the pressure remains on Ten Hag to find solutions and restore confidence within the squad as they look to turn their season around.
