Spectacular Barca Star Yamal Continues to Amaze

After dazzling spectators at last summer’s European Championship, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal continues to leave fans in awe with his performances on the field.

On Tuesday night, Yamal made Champions League history by becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in the tournament, helping Barcelona defeat Benfica and advance to the quarter-finals. This season alone, he has contributed to 28 goals, nearing a total of 60 goal contributions for both club and country—all at just 17.

Yamal plays with a confidence beyond his years, highlighted by his assist and goal against Benfica. He initiated a brilliant run toward the box, setting up Raphinha with a precise pass that allowed him to volley in. Moments later, Yamal showcased his striking ability with a stunning shot from outside the box that found the far corner of the net.

“His goal was spectacular,” praised teammate Raphinha. “It shows what Lamine is—a spectacular player with tremendous quality.”

Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over Benfica on the night and won 4-1 on aggregate to progress to the last eight, where they will face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille. Manager Hansi Flick noted, “Lamine hadn’t scored in a while, so he’s happy because it was a very important goal for us—a brilliant effort. We are all happy for him; he’s a great kid and a fantastic player.”

Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves compared Yamal’s rise to that of a teenage Wayne Rooney, stating, “I’ve never seen a 17-year-old that consistent… He scores goals, creates goals, and makes it look incredibly easy. The best 17-year-old I’ve seen.”

Having played 50 games for Barcelona last season and already 36 this term, Yamal is becoming a vital asset to the team. However, former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman cautioned against overworking him at a young age, referencing the injuries suffered by other young talents like Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Gavi.

“I hope I’m not talking in a year’s time saying he’s got a bad injury,” McManaman said. “He’s too good to be missing from the football field.”
