South Korean National Arrested in Pattaya for Illegal Tour Guiding

A South Korean national was arrested in central Pattaya on March 5th for allegedly working as an unlicensed tour guide, a role strictly reserved for Thai nationals.

Tourist Police officers noticed the suspect accompanying a group of foreign tourists at a local market. He was observed purchasing tickets and providing information about the site, despite not being a licensed guide.

After monitoring his activities for over an hour, officers approached him for questioning. It was confirmed that the tour group had no licensed guide, only a Thai van driver. Upon checking the suspect’s identification, authorities found that he was a South Korean citizen without a valid tour guide license—something unattainable for foreigners in Thailand. While foreigners can work in administrative or managerial roles for tour companies, they are not permitted to work as guides.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including “operating a tour business without legal approval,” “acting as a tour guide without a license,” and “working as a foreigner without a permit.” After being informed of his rights and charges, he contacted his relatives and was subsequently handed over to Nongprue Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Tourist Police urge the public to report any suspicious foreign workers through their 24-hour hotline at 1155.
