South Korea to Remove Antenna Barriers After Fatal Crash

In response to the tragic crash that claimed 179 lives on December 29, South Korea will remove concrete barriers at airports nationwide.

While the investigation into the Muan International Airport disaster is ongoing, experts have indicated that the large berm supporting navigation antennas at the end of the runway likely contributed to the severity of the crash. Only two crew members seated at the rear of the Boeing 737-800 survived the incident, which occurred approximately 180 miles south of Seoul.

Reports indicate that the aircraft, potentially affected by bird strikes, attempted to crash-land twice before veering off the runway and colliding with a wall, quickly becoming engulfed in flames. Footage suggested that the plane was traveling at speed without its landing gear deployed.

Following a review of the navigation structures known as Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), authorities have announced plans to construct new foundations or make other adjustments for similar antennas at seven airports, including Muan. The transport ministry confirmed, “Muan International Airport plans to completely remove the existing concrete and reinstall the localiser in a safer structure.” The ministry also stated the airport will remain closed until April 18.

As part of their response to the disaster, the transport ministry will implement a 240-meter (787-ft) runway safety area across all airports, aligning with relevant regulations. The runway safety area at Muan was only about 200 meters long before the crash.

Separately, police reported that Son Chang-wan, the former president of the state-run Korea Airports Corporation during the renovation of Muan’s structure, was found dead in his home, an apparent suicide. Authorities clarified that he was not under investigation related to the crash and had not been summoned for questioning.
