Second dead dolphin in a week found on Samui beach

The carcass of an endangered Irrawaddy dolphin washed ashore on Koh Samui on Thursday morning, the 10th dolphin to show up dead on the island this year, according to charity foundation rescue worker Pairoj Pulthawee.

Pairoj urged fishermen not to kill dolphins that get tangled in their nets.

“The dolphin population in the Gulf of Thailand is shrinking, especially in Surat Thani and Koh Samui and in Khanom district in Nakhon Si Thammarat,” he said, “so people should help protect them.”

Thursday’s carcass came ashore on Lipa Noi Beach, a 120-centimetre-long, 60-kilogram mammal too decomposed to determine the cause of death.

On Saturday (June 2), a two-metre Irrawaddy dolphin carcass was found on the same beach.
