Scottish Expat Dies in High-Speed Crash on Thai Motorway Flyover

Fatal Accident in Lopburi

A 62-year-old man, believed to have lived in Thailand for over a decade, was tragically killed after being ejected from his vehicle in a high-speed crash on a motorway flyover in Lopburi. The impact sent him plunging 30 feet to his death.

The horrific accident occurred in the early hours Saturday  leaving behind black skid marks and a wrecked vehicle as grim evidence of the crash.

Police Response and Investigation

Police Lieutenant Sirirat Darunikorn of the Ban Mi District Police Station confirmed that authorities received an emergency call at around 5 a.m. local time.

The victim, known locally as a retired oil rig worker from Stirling, Scotland, was a familiar figure in the community. He resided with a caretaker and a partner, though they were not legally married, while maintaining ties to his family back in the UK. Thai officials have since informed his relatives of the devastating news.

Community Mourning and Tributes

The local Rotary Club, where the deceased was a well-respected member, expressed their condolences, stating:

Thailand’s Road Safety Crisis

This tragedy once again highlights Thailand’s alarming road safety record, ranked among the worst globally. With a staggering 32.7 road deaths per 100,000 people, the government is working to reduce this figure to 12 per 100,000 by 2027.

Key factors contributing to the country’s high accident rate include inadequate road safety education, minimal driving test requirements, and weak enforcement of traffic laws—especially impacting tourists who frequently rent motorbikes without sufficient training.

As the UK Foreign Office awaits further details, this incident serves as another urgent reminder of the need for stricter road safety measures in Thailand to prevent more lives from being lost.
