A Russian tourist, Artem Bugorskiy, was arrested in Thailand on Thursday for allegedly causing the death of his 13-year-old son by drowning near Koh Ra island. During police interrogation on Friday, Bugorskiy claimed memory loss and said he could not recall the events leading to the tragedy.
Incident Details
Eyewitnesses reported an argument between the father and son before the incident. Bugorskiy allegedly grabbed his son and threw him overboard. He then jumped into the water after the boy. The boat’s captain and crew immediately stopped the vessel and attempted to rescue them.
Bugorskiy and his son had been staying at the Surin Islands National Park since November and were on their way back to shore when the incident occurred.
Suspected Motive and Investigation
Police suspect that family issues may have contributed to the alleged crime. Bugorskiy had reportedly separated from his Thai wife, the mother of the deceased boy, and the child was scheduled to return to live with her.
The boy’s body has been sent for autopsy, and Bugorskiy has been taken into custody at Takua Pa Provincial Court. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
