Ahead of England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, Roy Keane expressed concerns about a specific England player he believes could jeopardize their success in the tournament. Keane, known for his blunt assessments, did not hold back during his pre-match commentary on ITV.
With the match at Veltins Arena looming, Keane pinpointed the area he feels could be England’s downfall:
“It’s all about getting the balance right in your team. They’ve got some brilliant individuals, players who could walk into any team in this tournament. But it’s about the balance, especially defensively, against the top teams.”
Keane specifically highlighted Trent Alexander-Arnold’s positioning: “I think they’ll be fine in the group stages. Trent will manage in those matches. But against the real top teams, I think he will be found out. In central midfield, he’d be ripped to shreds.”
Southgate Backs Alexander-Arnold Amid Pundit Doubts
Keane’s skepticism isn’t isolated. Wayne Rooney also voiced concerns on the “Stick to Football” podcast, saying: “I wouldn’t have Trent anywhere near the middle of the pitch. He should stick to right-back.”
In response, England manager Gareth Southgate defended Alexander-Arnold: “Everyone is entitled to their opinions. That’s our world. We have to accept that and show what we can do. Trent has been keen and receptive to playing in this role, and he’s eager to improve.”
Despite the criticism, Alexander-Arnold has shown potential in his new role. In a recent match against Iceland, he created the most chances (3) despite playing only 25 minutes.
