Rory McIlroy Warns of Golf Fatigue Amid PGA Tour Changes

Rory McIlroy has expressed concerns that golf fans may experience “fatigue” due to the overwhelming number of events available, suggesting that the current PGA Tour schedule features “definitely too many” tournaments.

The 35-year-old Northern Irish golfer has previously voiced criticism of the LIV Golf circuit while co-founding Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), which is currently in its inaugural season. With a rise in golf content on platforms like YouTube, McIlroy believes the traditional offerings of the PGA Tour are becoming “diminished” against the backdrop of increased competition. He proposed taking cues from the NFL, which maintains a 17-game regular season.

“I can see how golf consumers might feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options available,” McIlroy noted. “To scale it back a bit and create a sense of scarcity in some aspects, similar to the NFL, could be beneficial. I definitely think 47 or 50 tournaments a year is too much.”

McIlroy is set to make his first PGA Tour appearance of 2025 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week. He cautioned against making excessive changes to mimic other sports, saying, “I don’t think we should try to simplify golf to attract more people. Golf has a rich history, and many appreciate it as it is. However, I understand the critiques regarding how the entertainment factor could improve.”

One ongoing issue within PGA Tour events is the pace of play, but McIlroy acknowledged that solutions are not straightforward. This week’s event at Pebble Beach will feature a limited field of 80 players, but smaller fields throughout the season may hinder opportunities for others to compete.

“There are various potential solutions, but not every one will satisfy everyone,” he explained. “While smaller fields could improve pace of play, they reduce playing opportunities for others. Additionally, during this time of year, tighter tee times are often necessary to accommodate daylight. If we could space out the tee times a bit more, it might help the flow of play.”
