PTT to sue websites spreading rumours about company

Petroleum giant PTT Plc plans to take legal action against people behind websites suspected to have spread damaging rumours about the company, a senior executive disclosed on Sunday.

The decision was made by PTT chief executive officer and president Tevin Vongvanich, according to Prasert Salinla-umpai, PTT’s executive vice president for corporate communications and social responsibility.

PTT has been hit by rumours regarding the company’s CEO and its personnel, which resulted in its share price declining. Prasert said PTT had become a victim of “fake news” and “distortion of information”.

“The CEO thinks we have to take legal action, particularly against the websites with intent to damage” the company’s reputation, Prasert said

However, legal action would not be taken against people who shared such information through social media out of their honest belief, with no signs of ill will, he added.

Prasert said the source of the rumours must be determined. PTT suspected the involvement of the same groups of people who had made similar online attacks against the company in the past.

“They seem to be the same group of people, as far as our initial investigation shows,” he told a group of Thai media in Munich.

The media trip was hosted by PTT to learn about the company’s future projects involving electric cars.
