Probe into love-triangle killing

A former football official who allegedly killed a local guesthouse owner with a knife on Saturday before attempting suicide has been detained by Pattaya police.

Sunthorn Porjai, 57, a physical trainer and former Thai Football League referee, was found in a confused state and covered in blood from an open gash on his neck when authorities and rescue personnel arrived at Jomtien Beach Road in Bang Lamung district.

Mr. Sunthorn, also known as Ben, was fighting off officials while brandishing a 40 cm knife that he had fastened to his arm. Eventually, he passed out.

Emergency personnel were able to find him, assist him, and bring him to Pattaya Hospital. Later, it was determined that he had also cut off his own oesophagus and been stabbed in the stomach.

Police arrived on the scene and found a woman’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood behind a counter. Saowaji Lekkian, 51, the owner of the guesthouse, was named as the woman. She had many slashes on her skull, and initial findings indicated that she had died from a neck stab wound.

A motorbike taxi driver who watched Sunthorn slicing fiercely at the woman before turning the knife on himself, according to the witness who reported the crime, heard screams. The attacker then continued to injure himself while using the knife to keep people away from him in his insane state.

According to the police, Saowaji reported receiving a threatening phone call to them in March. They came to the conclusion that she knew Sunthorn and may have had an illicit affair with him, which ultimately resulted in her murder.

Prakrot Lekkian, Saowaji’s 58-year-old husband, was too shocked to be questioned. He acknowledged that they had been married for more than 20 years and shared two children, but he was not aware of the details surrounding her murder.
