Fantasy football enthusiasts, take note: the Premier League has introduced a significant rule change regarding how teams announce their squads.
Starting from the next season, Premier League teams will be required to decide their line-ups a full 75 minutes before kick-off. This change aims to align the Premier League with UEFA competitions.
Traditionally, teams have had one hour to release their team sheets, including the starting eleven and substitutes. Although the new rule only adds 15 minutes to this timeframe, it represents a significant adjustment for many football fans, particularly those involved in fantasy football, who must submit their teams based on the starting line-up announcements.
The timing change for line-up releases isn’t the only update coming to the Premier League. The introduction of semi-automatic offsides is expected sometime in the autumn. This technology, showcased in the Euro 2024 tournament, the Champions League last season, and the 2022 World Cup, is one of FIFA’s latest innovations.
Euro 2024 has also seen the debut of a ‘snickometer,’ a device that detects handballs with a chip implanted in the football.
These updates coincide with the release of the full fixture list for the 2024/2025 Premier League season. The opening day will feature a ‘big six’ clash between Chelsea and Manchester City. In a poetic twist, Liverpool’s first game post-Jurgen Klopp will be a 12:30 pm Saturday kick-off against newly promoted Ipswich Town.
