Pattaya Woman Critically Injured After Call Center Scam Leaves Her in Debt and Despair

PATTAYA, April 6, 2025 — A 35-year-old Thai woman, identified only as Ms. A, is in critical condition after a tragic incident early Sunday morning in which she inflicted multiple self-injuries at her home in Soi Arunothai 9, central Pattaya. The woman, who identifies as a tomboy, had been under extreme stress after falling victim to a call center scam that left her heavily in debt.

At 12:16 a.m., the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Unit received a distress call and rushed to the scene alongside Pattaya City Police and volunteer responders. Upon arrival, they found the woman with over 10 self-inflicted wounds on her neck, wrist, and abdomen, lying in a pool of blood. A multi-tool keychain with a blood-stained blade was recovered near her.

Rescue workers administered emergency first aid and immediately transported her to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Her family, visibly distressed, remains by her side.

Relatives told authorities that Ms. A had been struggling with emotional and financial pressure for over a year, stemming from an elaborate scam. Posing as Chonburi police officers, the scammers accused her of involvement in illegal activities and convinced her to transfer around 800,000 baht for “account verification.” In her panic, she even borrowed money from friends and family to comply with the fraudsters’ demands.

After realizing she had been deceived, Ms. A filed a police report, but was unable to recover the lost funds, leading to mounting debt and psychological strain.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the devastating toll such scams can have on victims and their loved ones. The Pattaya News continues to report on the ongoing epidemic of call center fraud, which remains a major concern nationwide.

Authorities urge the public to be vigilant and to report suspicious calls. If you or someone you know is in emotional distress, support is available. The Samaritans of Thailand offer free, confidential support and can be reached via their website or hotline.
