Pattaya Officials Announce Upcoming Booze Bans for Elections and Religious Holidays

Pattaya officials are urging residents and visitors to plan carefully for upcoming events in the city, particularly local elections and Buddhist holidays, both of which come with alcohol bans.

The Chon Buri local elections are set to impose a dry period from 5 PM on January 31 to 5 PM on February 1, though the exact dates have yet to be officially confirmed. Under Thai law, alcohol bans are enforced 24 hours before and during voting to maintain order, regardless of whether individuals are participating in the elections. This particular election focuses on regional positions, with Pattaya’s mayoral seat not on the ballot this year.

In addition to election-related dry days, several Buddhist holidays in 2025 will also bring alcohol bans:

  • Makha Bucha Day: February 12 (Wednesday)
  • Visakha Bucha Day: May 11 (Sunday)
(Bars will reopen on Monday, May 12, despite being a government holiday)
  • Asalha Bucha Day: July 10 (Thursday)
  • Buddhist Lent Day: July 11 (Friday)
  • End of Buddhist Lent Day: October 7 (Tuesday)

These sacred days, rooted in Thailand’s Buddhist traditions, are marked by 24-hour alcohol bans to honor the spiritual significance of the occasions.

Visitors should note that some establishments, such as restaurant-bar hybrids, may remain open during these periods but are legally prohibited from serving alcohol. The bans generally last from midnight to midnight, though slight adjustments to timing are sometimes made by local officials.

To avoid disruptions to your plans, especially for those visiting Pattaya’s vibrant nightlife scene, it’s advisable to mark these dates in advance and prepare accordingly. Respect for Thai traditions and laws is encouraged during these observances.
