According to the Marine Department, the country’s first port of its kind could accommodate two liners at once.
The Marine Department will request approval from the next cabinet for its plan to construct a 7.4 billion baht port in Pattaya that can hold two large-sized cruise liners.
Construction at the planned location next to the Bali Hai dock would begin in 2026 and end in 2029 if the plan is approved, according to Wanchai Butthongdi, director of the department’s engineering division.
He stated on Thursday that when it is finished, the port will be the only one in Thailand created especially to accommodate substantial cruise ships.
The comforts of a true cruise terminal are now lacking because cruise ships dock in Bangkok and Laem Chabang ports, which are technically container terminals, he noted.
According to him, Asia and Thailand have become the top cruise vacation destinations as demand for cruise tourism increases across the globe.
According to him, the port will be built using a public-private partnership approach, with the government being in charge of both the actual building of the port and a one-kilometer jetty that can accommodate two cruise ships simultaneously.
The public sector would invest 5.5 billion baht on offshore and onshore infrastructure, which would include a port, a terminal, a bridge connecting to the port, and a parking lot. The operation and maintenance of utilities and equipment worth roughly 1.9 billion baht will fall within the purview of the private sector.
A 30-year concession would be offered to the private partner.
When utilized as a home port, the new port can accommodate up to 1,500 cruise passengers per hour; when used as a port of call, it can accommodate between 3,500 and 4,000 passengers per hour, he said.
Additionally, the port will have connections to popular tourist spots in the Pattaya area as well as Bangkok, Ayutthaya, and Samut Prakan. He stated that it would also provide ferry and speedboat services to neighbouring islands.
