Pattaya Launches 2025 Military Draft with Colorful Scenes and Strict Protocols
PATTAYA — April 7, 2025 — Pattaya officially kicked off the 2025 military conscription process today at Pattaya City School 2, with hundreds of eligible Thai men reporting for screening. The event, which draws national attention each year, was overseen by Lieutenant Colonel Adisai Netsawang, Commander of the 1st Infantry Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment.
Who Reported for Duty
-
👤 Thai men aged 21 and older, including those with previous deferments
-
🏘️ Residents of Nongprue subdistrict, villages 8–14, in Banglamung district, Chonburi
Participants underwent physical and medical evaluations to determine eligibility, with the aim of filling quotas for national service.
Strict Organization and Security
The draft site was tightly controlled:
-
👨👩👦 Family and supporters were limited to designated areas outside the screening zone
-
📸 Media coverage was allowed only from the perimeter, maintaining privacy for those undergoing selection
The draft process in Banglamung will run for four days, from April 7 to 10, all held at Pattaya City School 2.
A Touch of Color: Thailand’s Unique Draft Day Tradition
As in previous years, the event also saw the high-profile appearance of transgender individuals, many of whom arrived in full makeup and glamorous outfits. Under Thai law, transgender women are exempt from military service once they can provide official documentation confirming their gender identity.
These appearances, often both empowering and lighthearted, have become a viral tradition across social media in Thailand each draft season. Pattaya, known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, was no exception.
💬 Why It Matters
Thailand’s military draft is a major national event. While some opt for voluntary service, many participate in the lottery-style selection. Those picked are required to serve 2 years, while volunteers often commit to 1 year of service.
