New Zealand’s Waitangi Day 2019 celebrations

The national holiday celebrates the signing of the treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840 by Māori chiefs and the British Crown that granted the Māori people the rights of British citizens and ownership of their lands and other properties.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had attended a dawn service and at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds on Waitangi Day. The Waitangi Day national holiday celebrates the signing of the treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840 by Maori chiefs and the British Crown, which granted the Maori people the rights of British Citizens and ownership of their lands and other properties.

Ms Ardern expressed the importance of treaty remaining an active document with New Zealand doing its best to ensure Maori have the same rights as other New Zealanders.
