New Year Holiday Traffic Accidents in Thailand: 215 Lives Lost, 1,354 Injured

Between December 27 and 31, traffic accidents during the New Year holiday period in Thailand resulted in 215 fatalities and 1,354 injuries, according to Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin.

A total of 1,398 traffic accidents were recorded over the five-day period. Bangkok and Nonthaburi reported the highest death tolls, with 10 fatalities each. Ayutthaya saw the most accidents at 44, while Phuket reported the highest number of injuries, with 43 people hurt.

Eleven provinces reported no traffic-related fatalities during the holiday period.

New Year’s Eve Accidents

On New Year’s Eve alone, there were 262 traffic accidents, resulting in 36 deaths and 245 injuries. Speeding was identified as the leading cause of these accidents, accounting for 42.75% of cases. Other major factors included drink driving (24.43%) and unsafe lane changes (21.37%).

Post-Holiday Traffic and Safety Measures

As holiday travelers began returning to Bangkok and other economic hubs on January 1, significant traffic congestion was reported on major and minor highways.

Minister Somsak emphasized that drivers celebrating New Year’s Eve might have experienced fatigue, increasing the risk of accidents. To address this, he instructed the Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Centre to collaborate with provincial agencies to establish checkpoints and service points aimed at enhancing public safety.

Traffic management efforts were intensified to reduce congestion, while strict enforcement of road safety laws was ordered, targeting behaviors such as speeding, drink driving, and neglecting helmet or seat belt use.

Emergency and Public Transport Preparedness

Agencies were also directed to maintain order at bus terminals and ensure the readiness of public transport drivers.

The Ministry of Public Health, in coordination with the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM) and other organizations, mobilized emergency medical services via land, water, and air units. Resources, including personnel and medical supplies, were prepared to address potential emergencies during the holiday period.

The government continues to urge road users to prioritize safety to reduce the toll of accidents during festive periods.
