A failed asylum-seeker drove his car into a crowd during a trade union demonstration in Munich, injuring at least 30 people, including children. Among the injured, at least two individuals are reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an anti-terror investigation into what they believe was a deliberate attack. A 24-year-old Afghan man was arrested after police fired shots at the vehicle during the incident.
Prosecutors have reported that the suspect exhibits potential extremist tendencies, with German news site Zeit Online stating that he is believed to have posted Islamist content on social media prior to the attack. Reuters identified the suspect as Farhad Noori.
According to Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, Noori’s asylum application had been rejected, but deportation was not feasible. The suspect had a history of minor offenses, including shoplifting and drug-related issues.
Witness accounts describe the suspect’s car overtaking a police vehicle before accelerating into the crowd. The Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism is leading the ongoing investigation.
The attack comes just days before the Munich Security Conference, set to begin on Friday, which will feature high-profile attendees including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
