Monk Found Dead in Temple Room with Dog Bite Wounds; Dog Suspected in Fatal Attack

A 46-year-old monk was discovered dead in his room at a temple in Muang district early on Tuesday morning, with severe dog bite wounds suggesting a possible fatal attack by his pet pit bull.

Phra Bundit Butrasane, the abbot’s secretary, was found face down in a pool of blood by a temple disciple, identified only as Mr. Ou, at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Police reported that the monk had been dead for approximately two days before his body was discovered. His right hand was missing, and his face bore deep bite wounds, with damage to the bone on the right side of his head.

The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of death. However, it is suspected that the monk may have been mauled by his one-year-old pit bull, named Jord, which was found in the room after the door was opened.

Mr. Ou, who had not seen Phra Bundit since Saturday, reported that the lights in the monk’s room were still on late Monday night. When he knocked on the door without getting a response, he opened it from the inside, finding the monk’s lifeless body. The dog reportedly ran out of the room as the door was opened.

According to Mr. Ou, Phra Bundit had raised Jord from a puppy and kept the dog in his sleeping quarters. However, he described the dog as aggressive and possessive, having previously bitten the monk.

“There was a time when Jord even jumped up and bit Phra Bundit when he handed me something,” Mr. Ou recalled. “It’s hard to believe anyone in this temple would dare care for this dog after what happened.”

Earlier this month, a similar tragedy occurred in Saraburi province, where an 84-year-old man was killed by his dog, a cross between a Thai breed and a pit bull.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Phra Bundit’s death.
