Mo Salah Breaks Six Records in Liverpool’s 2-0 Win Over Man City

Mo Salah Breaks Six Records in Liverpool's 2-0 Win Over Man City

In a stunning performance, Mohamed Salah broke six remarkable records during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against Manchester City on Sunday, helping the Reds extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.

Salah scored the opening goal and assisted the second, marking Liverpool’s first win at the Etihad Stadium since 2015. With this match, he raised his total to 25 league goals this season, complemented by 16 assists, showcasing his importance to manager Arne Slot in the 2024-25 campaign.

Here are the six records Salah achieved during the match:

  1. He became the first player in Premier League history to register 40+ goal involvements across different seasons.
  2. Salah was the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to be involved in 50 goals across all competitions this season.
  3. He has now scored and assisted in 11 Premier League matches this season, the highest for any player in one season since Lionel Messi in 2014-15.
  4. Salah holds the record for the most assists by a Liverpool player in a single Premier League campaign, with 11 matches remaining to extend that total.
  5. He is the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist against the reigning champions in both matches of a season.
  6. Lastly, Salah is the first player to score over 25 goals while also recording 15 or more assists in a single Premier League season.

While praising Salah’s contributions, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher commented that the forward’s chances for the Ballon d’Or are hindered by his inability to win a “major tournament” at the international level, specifically referring to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Carragher received backlash for his remarks on social media and was challenged live on air by Daniel Sturridge and Micah Richards during a Sky Sports segment. Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys also indirectly criticized Carragher in his blog, expressing disbelief that Salah’s achievements would be dismissed simply because they occurred outside of mainstream European competitions.

With Egypt historically being the most successful team in AFCON, having won the tournament seven times, Salah will have another opportunity to claim the title later in the year. This ongoing debate underscores the larger conversation about the value of international tournaments and their impact on players’ legacies.
