Meta Replaces Fact-Checking Program with Community-Driven Model Amid Controversy

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced a significant shift in its misinformation management strategy by terminating its third-party fact-checking program in favor of a user-driven “Community Notes” system. Inspired by a similar approach implemented by X (formerly Twitter), the new model will rely on users to add context or corrections to potentially misleading content.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the change on January 7, 2025, citing concerns that the previous fact-checking approach had become “too politically biased” and was undermining trust in the platform. This move comes after years of criticism that independent fact-checkers unfairly suppressed viewpoints, especially during sensitive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. elections.

The controversy deepened with revelations that the U.S. government allegedly pressured Meta to moderate specific content. In a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg admitted that senior officials from the Biden-Harris administration pushed Meta in 2021 to censor COVID-19-related material, including humor and satire. “I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it,” he wrote.

The new system aims to promote transparency and reduce accusations of censorship. Zuckerberg emphasized that the Community Notes model fosters a more open and collaborative dialogue by decentralizing the fact-checking process.

The decision could have far-reaching implications for countries like Thailand, where social media is a vital tool for political discourse and news dissemination. Critics argue that community-driven systems risk amplifying misinformation if not adequately monitored, while supporters believe it empowers users to challenge narratives without fear of institutional bias.

As Meta transitions to this new approach, observers are keen to see whether the move will restore public trust or further polarize online discourse.
