Manchester United’s Modest Europa League Win Reflects Steady Progress Under Amorim

Manchester United's Modest Europa League Win Reflects Steady Progress Under Amorim

Manchester United achieved a solid 2-0 victory over FCSB, confidently securing their place in the last 16 of the Europa League. Amid concerns about the team’s performance, this victory highlighted some positive developments under manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim needed this success, especially as he himself acknowledged feeling and appearing significantly aged due to the pressures of management in Manchester. The team’s previous struggles in Europe, which saw them squander two-goal leads against lesser opponents, contributed to Erik ten Hag’s departure. However, under Amorim’s leadership, results have noticeably improved, even if performances have not always been inspiring. Fans now return to Manchester feeling proud rather than embarrassed, particularly after a final group stage match where many took the opportunity to enjoy Eastern European hospitality.

United faced Steaua Bucharest—though the club’s official name changed in 2017 due to a legal dispute—a match that carried historical significance with a pre-match tribute to Helmut Duckadam, a legendary goalkeeper from the 1986 European Cup final. Entering the match unbeaten in their last 12 Europa League group or league phase games, United appeared vulnerable early on, with the hosts looking more likely to score. A close miss by Mihai Popescu illustrated United’s ongoing issues with set pieces.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund struggled to make an impact, while Christian Eriksen was pulled back into a deeper role within Amorim’s system. Youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who previously impressed under Ten Hag, has yet to convince Amorim due to concerns over his stamina. However, a well-placed cross from Mainoo set up Diogo Dalot for the opening goal, reminding supporters of Mainoo’s potential. Following the match, Amorim praised Mainoo’s adaptability, noting his comfort in a more advanced position.

Mainoo scored again shortly afterward, confirming his emerging role within Amorim’s plans. Despite having opportunities to extend their lead, the manner of the win—particularly the solid second-half performance—served as a morale boost for Amorim and the team. The victory reinforces a path toward improvement as they progress further in the competition.
