Katy Perry is set to embark on an exciting journey to space as the leader of an all-female crew aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket. The aerospace company announced that the 40-year-old pop star will join a six-person team for the upcoming New Shepard NS-31 mission, which is spearheaded by journalist Lauren Sanchez, Bezos’ wife.
The crew features a remarkable lineup, including rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bio-astronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen, CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Sanchez herself. This mission marks the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program, designed to take paying customers to the edge of space.
In a recent post, CBS Mornings shared that King would be “going where few have gone before” and promised viewers they could “watch Gayle take to the skies” this spring.
Lauren Sanchez, 55, expressed her hopes for the mission to inspire others to “dream big.” In a video shared on social media, she reflected on her surprise at the opportunity: “If someone would have told me that I would be able to go to space one day, I would have definitely, well, I don’t know, laughed. I can’t believe it’s happening. My dad used to teach people how to fly, and I thought dreaming of becoming a pilot was a huge deal, and this is even bigger. The incredible women going on this flight are extraordinary in their fields and incredible storytellers. I hope this flight is transformative for them and sparks the imagination of those who hear their stories.”
Blue Origin has been conducting short tourist flights since 2021, offering passengers both free rides and paid experiences to enjoy weightlessness. Jeff Bezos, known as one of the wealthiest individuals globally, participated in the inaugural flight alongside his brother.
